The shoreline on Bald Head Island, NC is retreating due to erosion. Currently, efforts are being made to preserve public beaches, private property, and habitat for marine animals through beach nourishment. The Army Corps of Engineers is pumping sand that was dredged from the Cape Fear River onto sections of the island's beaches.

Scientists in the Marine Earth Atmospheric department at NC State University are monitoring the project. Research methods include mapping changes in the shape of the shoreline and in the sand particle size distribution.
