Dune Migration at Jockeys Ridge State Park, North Carolina

Jockeys Ridge State Park is one of the few remaining dune systems on the East Coast. It's peculiar desire to migrate beyond park boundaries poses interesting scientific problems centered on the prediction of dune migration rates. Our ongoing work at Jockeys Ridge has received generous support from the Friends of Jockeys Ridge as well as cooperative assistance from park personnel.

Our work at Jockeys Ridge State Park has generated interest in studies of dunes in other parts of the world, notably the Sahara. NASA and NSF-sponsored meetings in Tunisia in 1999 and Mauritania in 2001 provided the opportunity to describe dune migration problems at Jockeys Ridge and how detailed studies there might be used to combat the tremendous problems faced by several countries in Africa.
